Which One To Choose?
STARTER KIT TADELAKT – BASE
The BASE STARTER KIT of Tadelakt allows you to make a sample on a 30 cm x 30 cm hemp test plate (supplied in the kit) or small objects such as bowls, plates, glasses and more.
It is recommended for those who are approaching the Tadelakt Technique for the first time and wish to experience first-hand the experience of creating their own Tadelakt sample and seeing the final effect live by making it independently and learning the steps and procedures involved.
STARTER KIT TADELAKT – ADVANCED
The ADVANCED STARTER KIT allows the creation of a vertical/horizontal surface of about 1 SQM or medium-sized furnishing accessories such as sinks, vases, tables, lamps and much more.
It is recommended for those who already have a good technical and theoretical knowledge of the Tadelakt technique, as the advanced kit allows a real application that requires the preparation of the background and all the subsequent steps. People with good dexterity and the right knowledge or those who have already had good results with the Basic Kit can choose the ADVANCED KIT
TADELAKT STARTER KIT – PROFESSIONAL
The PROFESSIONAL STARTER KIT makes it possible to create an entire vertical wall measuring approximately 2.00 m x 1.50 m, as well as large furnishings such as fountains, tables, seats, trunks and much more
It is only recommended for those who have excellent technical and theoretical knowledge of Tadelakt, as well as practical experience. A consultation with the Master is always recommended before purchasing a Professional KIT, especially if you wish to use the starter kit to make a wall in your home in anticipation of a larger work.
LET’S LOOK IN DETAIL AT ALL THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THE TADALAKT STARTER KIT
MARRAKECH LIME
The queen of the Original Tadelakt technique is Marrakech Lime. It is a type of hydraulic lime that is obtained exclusively from the firing and fragmentation of stones extracted from quarries in the Atlas mountain range, south of the city. As this type of lime has unique characteristics, it is not possible to make this technique with any other type of lime or by adding other elements to Marrakech lime.
LIME-BASED FOR BACKGROUND
The primer for applying Tadelakt must have a ‘clinging’ surface, so it can be applied directly onto plaster or any old surface that allows the material to bond to the surface without slipping. When this precondition is not present, a lime-based primer is applied to allow Tadelakt to adhere to the surface.
NATURAL EARTHS
This term refers to all pigments derived from natural earthy or ferrous elements, and which have been used as dyes since antiquity. Moroccan craftsmen have historically not used natural earths much in Tadelakt, due to the scarcity of this material in those areas. However, natural earths have the advantage of being composed only of natural and bio-compatible elements.
THE CEDAR WOOD TROWEL
Composed of a valuable material such as Atlas Cedar Wood, the frattone is the representative tool of the tadelakt tradition. It is in fact the same one used by the first Berber craftsmen who created the technique centuries ago. Its purpose is to apply and distribute lime on the work surface.
THE RIVER STONE
The river stone is used after the laying phase to ‘massage’ the Tadelakt and give it its characteristic three-dimensional effect. It has a polished side that allows the surface to be rubbed without damaging it.
STEEL TROWEL
The steel trowel is the modern addition to the tadelakt technique. To achieve a more striking visual effect, the steel trowel is used during the drying phase to further distribute and ‘pull’ the material, bringing out its grain.
THE BLACK MARRAKECH SOAP
The application of the black soap layer is a fundamental part of the success of Tadelakt. In addition to protecting the surface and increasing its water resistance, the application of black soap with the typical river stone gives the lime a shiny, three-dimensional appearance.
BEES WAX
Beeswax has, like black soap, the task of increasing the water repellency and strength of the surface of the material. However, the wax should only be applied 10-15 days after the work is finished, when the material is completely dry and compacted.
LEMON TERPENE
Lemon Terpene is a solvent of natural origin that is extracted by distillation from citrus peel. It is used to melt beeswax or carnauba wax and create the protective mixture for Tadelakt.
HEMP TEST SAMPLE
Made of natural hemp and lime, it has an uneven surface that is ideal for tadelakt to cling to. It does not require a lime primer and the tadelakt can be applied straight on.
PRESSURE NEBULISER
The sprayer creates a uniform water jet. It is used especially on long jobs where it may be necessary to re-wet the material in order to work it more easily.
SPONGE ROLLER
The sponge roller is one of the quickest solutions for creating the base. Passed over the fresh lime, the roller creates the ‘peel’, i.e. the ideal clinging surface for the application of tadelakt.
TOOTHED SPATULA
The toothed trowel’s main function is to create an adhesion primer in places that are more difficult to reach with a roller or for medium-sized surfaces.
FLEX-RUBBER SPATULA
The rubber spatula is used for modelling tadelakt on small surfaces where for practical reasons it is impossible to use a trowel or trowel
SIEVE
Its purpose is to further sift the lime to remove impurities and create a homogenous powder that prevents imperfections due to the material during the drafting phase
BRUSH
The Brush is mainly used for spreading black soap during the drying phase to optimise its absorption
SERRATED STEEL TROWEL
The Steel Scraper Trowel is used for uneven spreading of limestone primer. It is particularly suitable for large surfaces
